In The Beginning…
Jeff Lyons began his flight training in 2007 in NJ, in a Robinson R22 then the R44. After achieving his rotorwing certificate, he transitioned into the Bell Jet Ranger, never looking back. His Father, Walt Lyons, frequently talked about flying and his time in Vietnam as a door gunner in the 7th squadron, 17th Calvary of the 1st aviation brigade A–Troop Ruthless Riders 1967–1969. Walt sharing his stories with his sons led Jeff to dreams of owning his own Huey. After years of hard work and saving, Jeff was finally able to get his own. The 1962 UH1-B needed a lot of work but as the ultimate tribute to his father, it was well worth the effort.
In January of 2017 Jeff’s long term friend, Bill Spadafora of Hudson Valley Helicopters joined forces in the mission to keep the AirOne Mobility INC. progressing into the future. Collectively, the team had been following the status of 70-20666 in the aviation marketplace for over a year. The helicopter, a 1970 Bell OH58c Kiowa Scout, had serviced the United States Army in Desert Storm from 1990 through 1993 with B company 101st aviation division.
When the aircraft was done with active duty, it made its way through more than one National Guard unit before it was donated to Missouri State Police, after which is was sent to public auction and sold to it’s new owner, A&S Helicopters. In 2014, A&S Helicopters restored 20666 to its active duty condition, as it was while serving in Desert Storm.
The AirOne Mobility Mission…
To honor this aircraft and those who have served our great nation. Restoring and maintaining airworthiness of this Vietnam era helicopter so that it may continue to be flown and displayed at airshows, memorials and other public special events. Preservation and education of this iconic warbird for past, present and future generations. Air One Mobility is a non profit, 501c3 organization, funded entirely by donations.”
20666 operates out of the Kingston–Ulster airport, (20N) in the center of New York State‘s Hudson Valley Region. We encourage you to visit AirNav before flying into the airport, or consulting current chart supplement (A/FD).
